Create a tabletop game (either a board game or a card game).
On a piece of paper/google docs, write out:
Game name
What are the goals of your game? Audience?
What are the mechanics (rules)?
Think of a storyboard showing the player’s journey and emotions through the game:
At least 3 people in your group.
Must have a playable prototype demo! (No fancy pictures or details needed. Just a rough game).
Can use any material (dice, clay, paper, etc.)
Showcase it at the end of the class!
The design document shows everything about your game — the goal, mechanics, story, rules, etc. Importantly, it shows the goal of the game through a “How Might We” (HMW) statement:
All kinds of designers benefit from using HMW statements. It is the goal of the game, and you would know if any design decision will contribute or detract from that goal.
How might we… (HMW)
Make a challenging platformer game that requires fun jumping mechanics but also explores anxiety and depression in a character’s personal story [Celeste]
